When I was overlooked and ignored,
Expectations fell to the middle school floor,
I was handed the traditional lore:
“It’s not about you.”
Watching others dream and aspire,
Their wealth overflows, accolades pile higher,
While I’m perpetually in the fire.
“It’s not about you.”
I chase God all the harder,
To compensate in Christ, I run much farther,
His glory my only charter.
“It’s not about me.”
Fire returned for obedience,
Beckoned to deeper waters, I beg for lenience,
I believe His grace proves sufficient…
Whether it is about Him or me
Or someone I can’t see;
For God is God
And I am only me.
As long as He’s watching.
As long as He’s here.
Then I’ll abandon my treasures
And swim deep in the sea.
As long as there’s purpose.
As long as He’s near.
I can bathe in the fire;
It’s not about me.

Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.
When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned;
the flames will not set you ablaze.
For I am the LORD, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.
